Will my insurance company actually pay for a new roof?

This is one of the most common questions we get when we speak with homeowners after letting them know their roof was damaged by a storm.

The short answer is yes, IF there’s enough damage.

Homeowner insurance policies are written to protect you in the event that there are damages caused by natural disasters, storms, fires, floods, or vandalism. The most common source of damage we find are wind and hail storms.

If a storm hits your roof and leaves it damaged beyond repair, insurance companies must pay to replace it in order to return the home to pre-storm condition.

Our promise to you is to treat every claim like we would our own families. We’ve handled hundreds of claims with a full replacement rate of over 90%.

how do I know if my roof is damaged?

That’s the easy part!

If there have been multiple roofs in your neighborhood going up, or if there was a recent wind or hail storm, there’s a good chance your roof may have been damaged. Even if you do not see any damage or missing shingles from the ground, an experienced roofing contractor will be able to identify damages to your roof, even if they are hidden or invisible.

The first step is to look up a reputable roofing contractor in your area and ask them to come out and check out your roof. Yellow Sun Contracting offers free inspections for roofs, especially in areas recently affected by storms. Many other roofing contractors offer this free service as well, but please do your due diligence as not all roofers are created equal.

At YSC, our project managers always start their 30-point inspection with ground-level photos of the exterior of the home, checking windows, siding, gutters, and anything else that could have storm damage. Then we climb the roof and notate any storm damage we find along with the condition and type of roof. We chalk up and take photos of the damages to show you their findings. We only use children’s chalk as it is temporary and will wash off with the next rain.

If our project manager believes there is enough damage to get the insurance company involved, we will let you know. We’ve worked closely with so many insurance companies on hundreds of claims and will advise you on the best course of action, but ultimately as the policyholder and homeowner, it is up to you whether to file or not.

If the damage is minor, our project managers will write up an estimate for the repairs or possibly perform a temporary repair or install a temporary tarp at no charge to you.
