The Roof Replacement Process – Asphalt Shingles

 

Replacing any roof is a pretty straightforward process. It really comes down to 3 steps: Remove Old Roof, Install New Roof, and Clean Up.

But within these three steps there are lists of sub-steps that need to be followed in order to ensure a quality installation. 

The below example is a standard asphalt shingle roof replacement.

Before the install:
  • Email and text reminders that the install date is coming up. 
  • Double-check the weather to make sure it won’t rain.
  • Materials are Delivered 1-2 days before work is scheduled.
  • Take photos of the house and materials to make sure everything was delivered.
Remove Old Roof:
  • Set up landscape and HVAC unit protection.
  • If needed, move furniture and outdoor belongings to a safe location. 
  • Set up ladders and other roof climbing equipment.
  • Tear off old shingles, valley protection, felt, and all other accessories. 
  • Inspect and replace any piece of plywood that are rotting or too weathered.
  • Dump all old shingles, nails, vents, etc in dumpster.
Install New Roof:
  • Set up equipment elevator. Install H-clips or re-nail plywood where needed.
  • Install Ice & Water Shield in all valleys and high-flow areas.
  • Install and dry-in synthetic felt.
  • Install Drip Edge and Starter strip on eaves and rakes.
  • Chalk lines on roof to ensure shingles get installed in a straight line.
  • Install field shingles, trimming or weaving where necessary.
  • Install new flashings where necessary.
  • Seal and waterproof all pipe boots and protrusions.
  • Install Ridge vents
  • Install Hip & Ridge Cap shingles
Clean Up:
  • Blow off excess debris and cutoffs from roof and gutters. 
  • Throw all debris, material wrappers, and waste into dumpster.
  • Sweep the perimeter of the home with magnetic bars to pick up as many nails as possible.
  • Inspect the siding of the home and clean any scuff marks.
  • Take photos of the completed roof.
  • Walk around the home with the property owner to ensure satisfaction.
